Competition project for a public square and playground
The project aims to transform a neglected agricultural area adjacent to the Sanctuary of Santa Maria dei Miracoli into a new public space for the local community of a rural Venetian village.
The intervention acts as a hinge, linking the 15th-century monumental complex to the residential village and the surrounding productive landscape. The architecture of the square draws inspiration from the modelling of local agricultural land, employing gentle slopes to harmonise the varying topographic levels.
The layout features a quadrangular perimeter at the level of the parvis dedicated to pedestrian and cycle mobility, within which is inscribed a sloping ellipse designed as a playground. This change in level is enhanced by a piece of bespoke urban design: a curved bench made of precast concrete elements, which features a planted trough facing the square, protecting the playground from traffic.
Reflecting local construction traditions, regional stones - such as Euganean Trachyte and Vicenza Stone - will be used as blocks for the new paving and as aggregates within the concrete for the bench.
